In the US, 15–20% is customary for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% common for good service.
Splitting the check shouldn’t require mental gymnastics. This tip calculator instantly works out the tip on any bill at the percentage you choose, adds it to the total, and divides the whole thing evenly between however many people are at the table — no awkward napkin math while everyone waits.
How to calculate a tip
A tip is just a percentage of the bill. To find it, multiply the bill by the tip rate divided by 100. Add that to the bill for the total, and divide by the number of people to get each person’s share. The calculator does all three steps at once, so you can adjust the percentage or the number of people and watch the per-person figure update.
The formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ number of people. For a quick mental estimate of 20%, just take 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left) and double it.
A worked example
On a $68.50 bill with an 18% tip split between 2 people: the tip is $12.33, the total is $80.83, and each person pays about $40.42. Want to leave 20% instead? The tip becomes $13.70 and each person pays $41.10. Tweaking the percentage shows exactly what better service is worth, and splitting handles the awkward part automatically.
Quick tipping tips
If the service was poor, it’s reasonable to tip on the lower end, but in the US tipped workers often rely heavily on tips, so very low or no tips are usually reserved for genuinely bad service. For large groups, check whether gratuity is already included before adding more. Need to work out percentages for other situations? Try our general percentage calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. For a $68.50 bill at 18%, the tip is $68.50 × 0.18 = $12.33. Add it to the bill for the total. The calculator does this instantly and can also split the total between any number of people.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% is customary for sit-down service, with 18–20% common for good service and more for exceptional service. Customs differ for counter service, delivery, and other situations, and outside the US tipping norms vary widely.
How do I split the bill with tip between people?
Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. The calculator handles this automatically — just enter the bill, tip percentage, and number of people, and it shows each person's share along with the tip and total.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the full total is also widely accepted and a bit simpler. The difference is usually small. Enter whichever bill amount you prefer into the calculator.
